Formative Assessment Design:

The potential difference in project-based learning

Formative assessment is a well-established part of any learning experience, especially a project-based learning experience. Yet projects often fail not because students are missing the Attributes, Skills, and Knowledge/Standards (ASKS) necessary to succeed, but because we are missing how our learners are approaching the project.

Unlike traditional approaches to PBL that rely on pausing projects to engage in traditional assessments, Project ARC’s proprietary Five Stages of Project Assessment help you design learning experiences with assessments that are authentic to the project and the learner’s journey through it.

As you review the Five Stages below, click on the links to take a journey through our website to see what we mean!

The Five Stages of Project Assessment

Challenge and Purpose

How do we know our learners understand are invested in the challenge?

Inquiry and Ideas

How do we know our learners have explored multiple pathways toward a solution?

Context and Perspective

How do we know our learners have explored user needs and technical expert feedback?

Actions and Consequences

How do we know our learners have considered potential positive and negative impacts?

Options and Opportunities

How do we know our learners have an actionable solution for their intended end user?
